State Archives of North Carolina"},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Description","value":"The North Carolina Symphony Society was incorporated as a non-profit, non-stock corporation on 31 December 1932.  Among its purposes were \"to promote and foster musical culture and education, and in the furtherance of said objects the Society may organize the North Carolina Symphony and other orchestras and supervise and provide for the training of musicians, and may arrange and conduct concerts and all forms of musical  entertainment.\"  The society and the newly formed North Carolina Symphony were to be governed by a board of directors of not less than twelve members, who served at the pleasure of the society.  Musicians Dr. Benjamin Swalin and Lamar Stringfield organized the orchestra and it was soon performing  across the state before audiences of adults and schoolchildren.   Stringfield was the ensemble's first conductor/director.  As a private organization the symphony survived for ten years through private and individual support.  During that time it performed over two hundred times in twenty cities and towns across North Carolina.  In  1943, acknowledging the important educational and cultural objectives of the North Carolina Symphony Society, the General Assembly placed it under \"the patronage and control of the State, to the end that its permanency  may be assured and that the State may to some extent lend financial aid  necessary to the support thereof.\"  The governor and Council of State were instructed to allot a sum \"not exceeding two thousand dollars  ($2,000) a year from the Contingency and Emergency Fund\" in support of  the society.  A sixteen-member governing board of directors was created, with the governor and superintendent of public instruction serving ex officio.  Four additional members were to be chosen by the governor; the remaining ten by the society.  After completing staggered first terms, appointees were to serve four-year terms.  In 1953 the symphony was receiving twenty thousand dollars annually in  state aid.  Counties and incorporated municipalities were encouraged to   make voluntary contributions, especially if the symphony presented  concerts in a particular location.  In 1955 the statutes were amended to   permit larger grants-in-aid.  The 1969 General Assembly made the society  exempt from \"all privilege license and gross receipts taxes.\"  Under the Executive Organization Act of 1971, the North Carolina  Symphony Society, while retaining its statutory functions, was  transferred to the management of the newly created Department of Art, Culture, and History.  In 1973 the department was renamed the Department  of Cultural Resources, and the North Carolina Symphony Society continued as an agency of the new department.  According to the 1973 Executive Organization Act, the North Carolina  Symphony Society is a semi-autonomous division of the Department of  Cultural Resources.  The 1973 legislation provided for a board of  trustees of not less than sixteen members, of which the governor and  superintendent of public instruction were to serve ex officio.  Four  other members were to be named by the governor and serve at his pleasure. The remainder were to be selected by the society.  Budgetary matters involving state grants-in-aid were to be managed through the Department   Cultural Resources.  As a rule, gubernatorial appointees to the board of trustees were to come from panels presented to the governor by the  secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources.  The North Carolina Symphony Society's current bylaws provide for a board of trustees of forty-two members.  The secretary of the Department  of Cultural Resources serves as an ex officio member of the board.  The board of trustees also has an executive committee composed of fifteen members, including the board chairman, vice chairman, secretary,  treasurer, and the secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources.  An executive director is employed as the chief administrative officer of the society, with \"the responsibility for the selection (other than musicians), employment and supervision of all personnel, signing employ- ment contracts, leases and other agreements as are necessary and  authorized by the board.\"  The orchestra's artistic director/conductor is \"in charge of the musical affairs of the symphony, including the  selection of musicians [and] arrangements of programs.\"  The North Carolina Symphony offers three kinds of presentations in every corner of the state: a classical series, featuring standard and premiered works for orchestra; a pops series, highlighting music in a  lighter vein; and annual in-school concerts, including pre-concert  teacher and student workshop preparation.
