Some family letters and business records concern his parents Henry and Dorothy McNeill, uncle Hector of Petersburg, Va., and brothers Pryor, John P., and Alexander in Kentucky, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Others relate to friends, including Daniel Mayes of Kentucky, and to his children's in-laws. There are letters about family in Scotland (1798), classes at UNC (1813), travel in Europe (1828-1829), land and cotton prices, river floods, banks and slave trade (1825) in Mississippi, slave prices in North Carolina (1830), Malcolm's property and interests in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana, presidential campaign (1840), and plantations after the Civil War. Most of the collection, however, concerns Malcolm's investments in Chicago real estate (1853-1874), with reports from agent, maps, contracts, deeds, and other papers. Letters from Chicago and Boston businessmen from 1860 to 1865 often include comments on the times, the postal service, and effect of military events on business, prices, and the presidential election; and others refer to McNeill's efforts to help Confederate prisoners of war at Camp Douglas and Alton, Ill., and retaliation there against mistreatment of Union prisoners. Also letter about runaway slave and children in Louisville jail (1864), and one from former slave (n.d.). Land records are from North Carolina (1760- 1831), Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Also slave bills of sale (1824-1852); bills from merchants and teachers; and wills of Malcolm, Eliza, and Pryor McNeill.
