Within the first group of letters are seven written [to family] by Private Sam Watson Houston (1891-1986) while serving in Company I, 107th Infantry, 27th Division, in France during World War I. The second small group of six items includes four letters written by Private William James Hartsell (1912-1999) while serving in Italy and France with the 3rd Infantry Division, during World War II. They also are addressed to family members. Three of the letters are addressed to Private Sam Houston's father and mother (Hugh C. and Martha J. Houston of Harrisburg, N.C.), while the other four are addressed to his sister Ella and his teenaged brother \"Zeke\" (Ezekiel). The letters all relate to farm matters and hunting at home in Cabarrus County, or to Christmas packages to be sent to Houston in France. Two of the letters written by others to Ella Houston in 1918 and 1920 are unrelated to her brother's time in service, but are personal to her potential commercial education at Brown's Business College, Charlotte, N.C., and to an admirer's response to a rebuff she had given. The second small group of six items includes four letters written by Private William James Hartsell (1912-1999) while serving in Italy and France with the 3rd Infantry Division, during World War II. They are addressed to his sister and brother-in-law, Ellie Mae and Zeke Houston, and their daughter Edith. The letters are typical of soldiers' letters of the period--keeping in touch with family back home. Two of Zeke Houston's Rationing Board documents are in the collection: (1) tire inspection record; and (2) notice that his application to purchase an inner tube has been approved. There are four 1918 envelopes and one each from 1944, 1945, and 1954, for which there are no letters."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"2 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Houston Family Letters.
