Papers of Colin Shaw I (d. ca. 1791) include letters from Scotland about family and immigration to North Carolina (1764, 1770, 1789); militia commissions and certificate of service under Donald McDonald until defeat at Moores Creek Bridge; letters from Shaw as loyalist refugee in New York; partnership agreement (1780) for trade in Georgia; fragment of a petition to remain in North Carolina (1782); and proposal for building two meetinghouses along the Cape Fear, 1785. Papers of Colin II (d. 1821), lawyer and member of the General Assembly, include accounts of the Fayetteville Polemical Society (1803), lists of militia absentees (1804-1806), list of Fayetteville voters (1804), letters from friends studying and practicing law in the Carolinas, and one from Duncan McFarland in Congress on relations with Spain (1806). Papers of Colin III (1812-1905), Presbyterian minister and Confederate chaplain, include tuition receipts from Donaldson Academy (1834) and letters relating to defense preparations below Wilmington in 1861. The collection also contains land papers from Cumberland, Bladen, and New Hanover counties (1735-1874); many receipts, accounts, bills of sale, and promissory notes, some for slave hire (1756-1843); court papers; bonds; estate papers; and a printed report on students at Fayetteville Academy (n.d.)."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"3 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Colin Shaw Papers.
