Paige were brothers from a Scottish immigrant farm family in Warren County, New York. Both brothers were soldiers in the Union Army serving in North Caroina during the Civil War. The older brother, Hiland, was wounded in the raid on Fort Fisher. In a letter dated March 17, 1865 from Wilmington, Hiland told his parents that he had been injured and does not think he will be able to move out with the army the next day. He is most impressed with the town of Wilmington and in this letter compares it to \"a northern city.\" He died from his injuries a few weeks later. R.E.D. Paige, the younger brother, came down with measles while in Wilmington. A number of his letters are from field hospitals where he was recovering from that disease. His letters deal primarily with the family and the family farm. He describes for his family the South and his impression of the land, the crops, Wilmington, New Bern, and his view from a troop transport train.
