Most items date from 1837 to 1851, and relate to Biggs's extensive operations as a retailer of general merchandise and as commission merchant handling shingles and staves, fish, and various crops. Included is correspondence with merchants, manufacturers, and agents in eastern North Carolina, Charleston, Norfolk, Baltimore, and New York and with business partners. Other items include invoices, receipts, advertisements, and inventories. Family correspondence includes letters from his brother William in Vicksburg and New Orleans and from his brother Asa in the legislature (1844) and Congress (1846) describing debates on the homestead bill, Oregon, the subtreasury, and the tariff, and commenting on the Mexican War. Other papers relate to his activities as a Freemason. Papers relating to William F. G. Pierce of Williamston and Windsor (1837--1849) include letters from superintendent of the Eastern Asylum at Williamsburg, Va., about his sister, a patient, and from his brother in Texas, as well as papers concerning the hire of slaves. Also jury report on dowry of Penelope Hare, (1787); and district voter lists for constable elections in Bertie Co.
