Mike Easley today granted a pardon of innocence to Leo Waters, who was convicted in 1982 for first degree rape, first degree sexual offense and robbery with a dangerous weapon. At the time of the original trial, the victim identified Waters as her assailant, while Waters maintained his innocence. DNA testing confirmed that he was not the assailant. A new suspect has been indicted and is in custody.
