He was the youngest of eight children. The Allens were an African-American family living in segregated Raleigh, N.C., in Oberlin Village. In 1940 Floyd Allen worked at the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (present-day North Carolina State University) college laundry and Alcora Allen worked at home as a laundress. Allen graduated from J.W. Ligon High School in 1955. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1958 on active duty, and to 1961 on reserve duty. He reached the rank of Yeoman (Typist) Second Class during his Navy service. Allen enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve on October 12, 1955. He was stationed for basic training at the U.S. Naval Training Center in Bainbridge, Maryland, in 1955 and early 1956, serving in the 39th Company. While at Bainbridge, Allen became a member of the Naval Training Center's Center Concert Choir. Allen was one of only three African Americans in the 39th Company, which was composed of more than 80 members. After his basic training, Allen was assigned to serve as Yeoman (Typist) Third Class in Commander In Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (CINCLANFLT) Headquarters, based out of the Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia. He worked in the Headquarters office as a typist until his later deployment to a U.S. Navy ship. In 1956, Lawrence Allen was assigned as a typist aboard the USS Macon (CA-132), a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser, part of the U.S. Navy's Sixth Fleet. The Macon was sent on a Mediterranean cruise beginning on September 8, 1956, departing from Norfolk for a five-month tour of duty. The cruise was part of the United States' involvement in the Suez Canal Crisis in Egypt in late 1956. The Macon stopped in numerous Old World ports in the Mediterranean, allowing Allen and his shipmates to tour in Greece and Genoa, Italy, among other locations. Allen also spent time in Scandinavia, including a stop in Sweden between 1957 and 1958 (though it is unknown if this was while serving aboard the Macon). In October 1957, upon return to his work as a typist at CINCLANFLT in Norfolk, Virginia, Lawrence Allen was granted top-secret clearance, in order to work with classified documents. Allen was discharged from active U.S. Navy service on September 5, 1958. He remained in the Navy Reserve until being discharged on September 20, 1961. After his active military service, Allen returned to Raleigh, where he worked as an attendant at North Carolina State College's Phillips 66 Gas Service Center. In 1961, he graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. By 1963, Lawrence Allen was working in the Business Office at Shaw University. By 1968, he was working as the Director of Financial Aid at Shaw University. Allen would go on to work at College Foundation, Inc. (CFI), in Raleigh for a number of years. He was married to Beatrice R. Allen. Lawrence E. Allen Sr. died on January 7, 2017. He was buried in Carolina Biblical Gardens in Garner, N.C.
