S. Burgwyn enlisted in the Confederate army in 1861 at the age of fifteen because of his brief military training he was given the rank of 2nd Lieutenant attached to Colonel Johnston Pettigrew's 22nd North Carolina. At the time of this letter his brigade was constructing batteries on the Potomac River. In this letter to his mother William reports on the health of a few officers as well as his own health, he also asks if she has heard if his friend has returned to Chapel Hill, and mentions he should be home within two months for their job is nearly done."},{"label":"Identifier","value":"PC_4_William_H_S_Burgwyn_Papers_Letter_18610909"}],"description":"Letter: William H.
