Thirty-four telegrams to Beauregard in Charleston from Gen. W. H. C. Whiting at Wilmington (Dec., 1862) concern defense in Wilmington and Goldsboro, Federal raids on railroads and telegraph lines, blockade-runners, ordnance for Ft. Fisher, and need for telegraph operators. Fifty-nine subsequent telegrams from Whiting to Beauregard in Virginia and North Carolina (Apr.-Dec., 1864) relate to defense of Wilmington and Petersburg, movements of Federal fleet and troops, reinforcements, captured Negroes needed for labor, Federal raids on saltworks and suspected disloyalty there, and disposition of troops and weapons. The eighteen telegrams from Gen. D. H. Hill concern reconnaissance duty at Petersburg and Lynchburg (May-June, 1864) and problems of troop transportation from Augusta, Ga., to Goldsboro (Dec., 1864-Mar., 1865), including problem of disloyal telegraph operators. Three postwar letters from Hill refer to proposed memoirs favorable to Beauregard and Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and condemn Civil War histories of Edward A. Pollard."},{"label":"Digital Characteristics","value":"2 pages"},{"label":"Format","value":["Finding aids"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"The SA of NC considers this item in the public domain by U.S. law but responsibility for permissions rests with researchers."},{"label":"Source Collections","value":["Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard Papers.
