Joel Lassiter was raised in the town of Boykins in Southampton County, Virginia, and graduated from Southampton High School in 1961. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 1, 1961. Lassiter completed his basic training in San Diego, California; and attended electronics school at the U.S. Naval Station Treasure Island on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay, California. After training, Lassiter was assigned to the USS Independence (CVA-62), a Forrestal-class aircraft carrier. He reported to the Independence in late 1962, and was aboard the aircraft carrier when it participated in the U.S. Naval blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. He served as an electronics technician on the Independence from 1962 to 1965, participating in cruises in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and South China Seas. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy on July 12, 1965, having reached the rank of E-3. After his Navy service, Lassiter married Claudia Rae Edwards on August 22, 1965, in Southampton County, Virginia, and moved to Harrisburg, Virginia. He used the G.I. Bill to study electrical engineering from Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia. Lassiter and his first wife divorced on January 27, 1977; he would remarry to Sheila Hatch. Lassiter eventually moved to Raleigh, N.C., and worked for IBM (International Business Machines) Corporation until his retirement. Joel K. Lassiter Sr. died on April 29, 2012.
