Penitentiary (1871-1873) after conviction for involvement with the KKK; assistant editor of Southern Home (Charlotte); legislator from Mecklenburg Co. (1876); and editor of the Farmer and Mechanic (Raleigh), 1876-1885. Most of the papers are typed or manuscript drafts of his reminiscences \"Three years in Battle and Three in Federal Prisons,\" much of which was published in J. G. de Roulhac Hamilton (ed.), The Papers of Randolph Abbott Shotwell, 3 vols. (Raleigh, 1929-1936). Manuscript drafts about the war include drawings, sketch maps, and quotations from his wartime diary, which is not in the collection. A later diary, written and illustrated in Albany Penitentiary (Oct. 16,1871-Aug. 15, 1873), is in this collection and was published in the reminiscences. Unpublished writings on his later career concern the election of 1876, his record as a legislator, and his enmity toward Judge George W. Logan and David Schenck. Also in the collection are a few copies of Shotwell's letters from Albany or about the Southern Home; a few letters to Shotwell (1874-1878) from wife of Capt. Louis D. Pilsbury in Albany, from Gerrit Smith, and from publisher E. J.
