G., 12th Regt. NCT. Antebellum letters include some from students at UNC, Chowan Female College, the University of Pennsylvania medical school, from dancing master in Washington (N.C.), and from Piedmont Springs; others describe trip to Niagara Falls and Montreal, local Whig politics, and Gregory's campaign for mayor of Halifax (1857). There are also minutes of a citizens' vigilant meeting (1860). Civil War letters concern romances at home, runaway slaves, proceedings under the sequestration act (1862), and election of officers, Co. G., 12th Regt. NCT (1863). As prisoner of war at Pt. Lookout and Ft. Delaware (1864-1865), Gregory corresponded with friends, relatives, and business acquaintances in the North and South. Postwar letters concern entertainments, debts, difficulties in the courts, local politics, Republican candidates and officeholders, improprieties charged to County Solicitor J. C. L. Harris, and Gregory's change of party from Republican to Democratic in 1892. A petition from 22 Negroes protests bogus delegates to a convention (1888). Political and business correspondents include A. J. Burton, Edward Conigland, John H. Hannon, A. D. Harris, J. C. L. Harris, William A. Hearne, John Norfleet, Tasker Polk, T. R. Purnell, J. E. Rice, and William R. Wood. Family letters are from Beaufort (1875); from St. Mary's in Raleigh, private schools in New York and Paris, National Park Seminary in Maryland, Horner's School, UNC, and NC A&M; from daughter Jessie, companion to Miss Mary J. Miles in Paris, New York, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City; from son Edwin in Salisbury as law partner of Lee S. Overman; and from son Quentin in tobacco trade in China (1906, 1910). Correspondence with sister-in-law Bettie Clarke concerns her teaching and her desire to buy Henderson Female College and sell Granville Female Institute (1889).   Gregory's extensive farm records (1830-1905) include correspondence with cotton merchants in Norfolk, Va., bills of lading, production records, bills for goods and services, agreements on slave hire and sharecropping, and laborers' work records. There are also a few land papers, will of William B. Hathaway (1851), and estate papers for Benjamin F. Ellis, W. W. Carter, John H. Wood, and Godwin C. Whitehead. Clerk of superior court and Halifax town treasurer papers and some from constable and jailer include bonds, lists of fees, accounts, reports, depositions, witness receipts (1855-1857) and list of taxable businesses (1876). Other items include brief diary (Camp Carolina, Norfolk, Aug., 1861) containing description of the Merrimack; casualty list for 12th Regt. NCT (Aug. 9, 1862); school reports and receipts; lists of American party members (1855), votes for mayor (1857), and voter registrations (1892); and draft minutes of meeting to choose secession nominee for election to state convention (Feb., 1861).
