Francis tells Martha he is walking again, but slowly. He is upset by the news that she and their daughter Mary have been ill and that his wife cries because he can't come home. He asks his wife and mother to send him food; he would write his mother but he has no paper. He has still drawn no pay and gets very little food. He mentions that Lee may pull back from Petersburg and that there has been fighting there, although he doesn't know how heavy the Confederate losses might be. To his wife's statement that she has heard that there will be peace soon he replies that he sees no sign of peace coming. He asks about her farm animals and hopes God will provide for them if the winter is hard. He thinks often about her and the children, especially the baby he has never seen.
