Charley was wounded near the top of his head on July 3, 1863 ' John writes that he thinks the bullet didn't go through his brother's brain but that may have 'bruised' it since his brother never spoke after that. John carried him from the battlefield after he was shot and stayed with Charley until he died at 2 PM, July 3. They buried him that night. John grieves for his brother and wants to come home.
