William Holland Thomas was not Cherokee, but he served as their attorney beginning in 1831 and successfully negotiated with the United States government to allow certain Cherokees to remain in North Carolina on tracts of land that were not part of earlier land cessions, avoiding forced removal to the west under the Treaty of New Echota (1835). The remaining Cherokees became the core of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
