Historical Commission, including papers of the Hilliard, Williams, Hawkins, and Wortham families of Bute, Warren, and Nash counties. Antebellum correspondence is chiefly that of Leah Hilliard and her sons Isaac and James, of Micajah T. Hawkins, and of John B. and Temperance Hilliard Williams; it deals mostly with local and family matters such as education in Louisburg and at UNC, slaves, vineyards, spas, and horse racing. Political issues of the 1830s and 1840s are referred to in the personal correspondence of Warren Co. Democratic Congressman Micajah T. Hawkins and in a few papers of Abraham W. Venable. An undated letter describes Halifax Co. meeting critical of President Taylor [1850]; and letters to Democratic Congressman H. M. Shaw from John W. Ellis, Thomas Bragg, and others concern state and national politics in 1858.   Among the papers of Col. George W. Wortham of the 50th Regt. NCT, who commanded at Plymouth after its recapture (May-Oct., 1864), are order books (1863-1865); muster rolls; petition from residents and salt makers of Masonboro and Myrtle Grove sounds (1863); and rosters of officers, guards, the sick, and prisoners at Plymouth. Correspondence includes letters about army discipline and chaplains (1863); draft letter from Federal soldier occupying Plymouth; copy of letter from Wortham to Governor Vance describing conditions in recaptured county (May, 1864); reports on movements of U.S. gunboats in Albemarle Sound; letters from Tarboro hospital surgeon and from commander at Washington, N.C.; from William V. Bonner at Bath and others about attempts to recover slaves, harassment by Confederate soldiers, poverty, Federal sympathizers or \"Buffaloes,\" and loyalty of many, including some Negroes, during the occupation; and from Wortham describing defense of Savannah and conduct of troops near Averasboro (1865). Papers of Maj. H. A. Dowd and Capt. C. W. Garrett, assistant quartermasters for clothing, N.C. Troops, include receipts, accounts, and letters to them and to Governor Vance about clothing contributions, shortages of wool, yarn, cotton, and leather, purchase of western cotton, price controls, speculators, cotton cards, and exemption of textile workers.   Postwar letters refer to national Republican politics, conditions in Louisiana, and possible emigration to Argentina. Letters (1893-1926) to Thomas Pittman from Kemp P. Battle, H. G. Connor, A. W. Graham, and H. C. Jones concern the collection of historical material and a commission to codify North Carolina laws.   Land records (1742-1862, 1912) are chiefly of the Hawkins family in Warren Co. Business papers relate to Micajah T. Hawkins and his plantation. Other personal records, mainly from Halifax, Warren, Wake, and Granville counties, include wills (1762-1860) and a few estate and guardian papers; marriage bond and licenses (Wake and Warren counties, 1792-1855); slave papers (Warren and Halifax coun-ties, 1808-1860); bonds, contracts, and labor agreements; and papers from legal proceedings. State and local government records include tax lists from Bute (1771) and Warren (1792) counties; Bute Co. ordinary bonds (1774, 1775); Halifax Co. apprentice bonds (1802); minutes, resolutions, and lists of members and Association subscribers for the Bute Co. Committee of Safety and letters to them from Samuel Johnston and Thomas Person (1774-1776); copy of state oath of allegiance and list of persons taking oath (1778, presumably Bute Co.); and Camden Co. oaths of allegiance (1867). A volume contains records of federal excise taxes collected, 4th District of N.C., 1886.   James Cary papers (1776-1807) include letter book (1782-1789) recording letters to former North Carolina agent Alexander Elmsley and British officials regarding his claims for losses as a loyalist and for pay as loyalist militia officer; papers relating to his property in South Carolina, Jamaica, and Virginia; and papers of his wife Mary Cary.   The wealth of miscellaneous printed material in this collection includes legislative documents (1868-1913); reports and bulletins of state agencies (1869-1927); Freedmen's Bureau report (1867); reports of navigation and railroad companies (1824, 1860-1870, 1897); annual reports and other material from the Episcopal, Baptist, and Disciples of Christ churches (1840-1846, 1868-1926); catalog of North Carolina exhibit at American Exposition (1883); items relating to UNC (1839-1861), Laurinburg High School (1885), Latta University (1894), and Robeson Institute (1894-1895); list of private schools in N.C. (1890); reports on education in and town code of Henderson (1920-1926); pamphlets on law, education, and biography; memorial for changes in slave code (n.d.); information for Confederate tax officials; political slates and propaganda broadsides; printed and manuscript speeches and essays; items relating to clubs and associations; advertisements; clippings; almanacs; plays, novelettes, poetry, and magazines. Miscellaneous manuscript items include a manuscript historical novel by \"M.J.H.\"; Eliza B.
