His letters are directed to his widowed mother, Susan Barnhill (b. ca. 1802), and his brother, A. J. Barnhill (b. ca. 1822). In this letter, Duncan Barnhill writes to his mother. He tells her of a guard duty assignment, and of the quality of the food he has been getting.
