Willard Hogsed registered for the U.S. Army on December 2, 1946, while residing in Brasstown, N.C. His service, which began in 1947 and ended in 1968, spanned the entire Korean War and the early stages of the Vietnam War. During the Korean War, Hogsed served in the Company E, 2nd Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army. He later served with the 56th Weather Wing in the U.S. Air Force. Hogsed participated in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and the Battle of Inchon during the Korean War. He reached the rank of Sergeant First Class during this military career.
