The warrior on the viewer's left holds a bow and arrow while riding a yellow horse. He is in profile view looking down at the bison who is at the center of the page. The other warrior, on the viewer's right, holds a pistol that has just been fired. His horse is blue and both he and the horse are in profile view. Two other warriors are behind a small hill with tufts of green grass. Both of these warriors hold bows. Information from the Cheyenne Ledger Art exhibit 2024: The bison in both drawings (1996.17.0139 & 1996.17.0140) are painted from right to left. This is typical of Cheyenne ledger drawings. According to Gordon Yellowman, the warriors are not hunting but are simply passing by a small herd of buffalo in the night and during a full moon. All they see are shadows and that is why the bison are colored black. The warriors are not interested in hunting or killing the buffalo.
