He describes his makeshift mansion as a small hut with a fireplace and a bed made of pine boughs. He also vents a bit about the newspaper reports that did not give the Pennsylvania Reserves enough credit for their part in the fight. On a more personal note, he is clearly saddened to hear about the death of the family dog, Jack, and tells his wife to let little Charlie know he will get him a new dog as soon as he can. Between the five cent apples and the hope for a furlough, he is just trying to stay warm and get through the winter.\n\nJohn P. Fell was a soldier in the 7th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment.
