Shipley wrote to his Cousin Bell to explain that he was hurrying Fannie back toward Confederate lines before Generals Jackson and Ashby blocked the roads again. He wrote about his firsthand account of a Union retreat from Strasburg and Middletown, claiming that Northern forces abandoned millions of dollars in medical stores, wagons, and horses while taking heavy losses in prisoners. He also described the experience of hiding in a cellar while shells and gunfire passed over the town, which he viewed as a moment of deliverance from Northern control.
