He is frustrated that the paymaster arrived just a little too late for him to send cash home with Speer, but he hopes to work out a deal where the Captain lends his wife some money once he reaches Wilkes-Barre. John encourages her to ask the Captain for the real story of the battle at Fredericksburg and their recent miserable march through foot-deep mud. He is still holding out hope for his own furlough once the regiment finally gets paid and ends by sending his love to his kids and several family friends.\n\nJohn P. Fell was a soldier in the 7th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment.
