It defines honour as 'a claim to worth and the social acknowledgement of that worth' and argues that honour in first-century Mediterranean culture is acquired through agonistic interaction (honour gained through extrafamilial social contests between males in front of a public court of reputation, where honour is a limited good that is gained or lost depending on an individual's social performance). Individuals in \"honour-shame cultures\" are said to be constantly concerned with how their behaviour compares to the norms and expectations of their culture. \nProponents of the honour-shame model acknowledge that the real-life experience of honour and shame is more complex than the model presents, but thus far few adjustments have been made to the model in consideration of this complexity. Examination of the text of Titus reveals that the Cretan church faced not one public court of reputation, but multiple courts, each with their own criteria for dispensing honour, which sometimes overlap and sometimes compete. Paul calls Titus to lead the Cretan churches in navigating through this complexity, choosing to garner honour from certain people groups and reject the respect of others, using appropriate strategies to acquire honour.\nTitus' presentation of the complexity of honour-shame interactions has implications for both the honour-shame model and for Christian practice. For the honour-shame model, Titus alerts the reader to avenues of acquiring honour that are virtuous and affiliative, not agonistic nor competitive.
