These disciplined records of personal expenditures, and of various other daily observations, furnish valuable information about prices and availability of commodities of the period and provide abundant evidence of Jefferson's devotion to a systematic way of living and of his insatiable curiosity.
The transcription, annotation, and publication of Thomas Jefferson's memorandum books was a monumental project, decades in the making. James Bear began the project ca. 1980, research historian Lucia (Cinder) Stanton later joined him in the project, and it was finally brought to completion as part of ICJS's publications program in 1997. Its importance to scholarship on Jefferson, Monticello, and the world of 18th and early 19th century plantations cannot be overstated.
