Transcriptions. \n\nSimon McGillivray was born about 1783 or 1785, in Dunlichty parish, Inverness-shire, Scotland.\n\nHe was a businessman. His education was paid for by his wealthy uncle Simon McTavish, of Montreal, who also provided him and his two brothers with careers within his fur-trading empire. He worked at the McTavish, Fraser & Co. in London to maximize profits for the Montreal firm. He became a partner of the firm in 1805 and in 1811, he was made a partner of the parent company in Montreal, McTavish, McGillivrays & Co. In 1821, Simon took a leading role in merging the family-owned North West Company with the rival Hudson's Bay Company. By 1825 their Montreal and London firms, McTavish, McGillivrays & Co., and (since 1822) McGillivrays, Thain & Co. went bankrupt and they were left in debt. His London career continued to prosper. In 1829, Simon was chosen by the United Mexican Mining Association of London to go to Mexico to help reorganize the administration of the company's silver mines. In 1835, he became a co-owner of the Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser. A Freemason in London, from 1822 he held the position of Provincial Grand Master of Upper Canada, a position he held until his death. In 1838, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.\n\nIn 1837, he married Anne Easthope. He died on June 9, 1840, in Blackheath, Kent, England.\n\nHenry Mackenzie was born in 1781 in Achnaclerach, Contin, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.\n\nHe was a seigneurial agent, fur trader, merchant, Justice of the Peace, and militia officer. Henry McKenzie, a lesser-known figure, was the brother of Roderick, Donald, and James, and a cousin of Sir Alexander Mackenzie. He moved to Lower Canada shortly before 1800 and was hired as a clerk at Grand Portage, Minnesota. In 1803, he settled close to Montreal in the seigneury of Terrebonne, which belonged to Simon McTavish. He helped him manage it and as a seigneurial agent, he established contacts with grain dealers and exporters. In 1806, he obtained a commission as Justice of the Peace for the district of Montreal. At the beginning of the War of 1812, he joined the Terrebonne battalion of the militia as a major and later was promoted to lieutenant-colonel. In 1814, he purchased 2 of the 19 shares of McTavish, McGillivrays and Co. and became one of the partners of the Michilimackinac Company. In 1815, McGillivray put him in charge of public relations for the North West Company. The same year he joined the Beaver Club. He was a member of the Scotch Presbyterian congregation in Montreal, serving as its vice-chairman in 1819 and 1822, and chairman in 1823 and 1825.\n\nIn 1815, he married Ann Bethune, daughter of John Bethune and sister of Angus Bethune. He died on June 28, 1832, in Montreal, Quebec."},{"label":"Name access points","value":["McGillivray, Simon, 1783-1840","McKenzie, Henry, 1781-1832"]},{"label":"Place access points","value":["London (England)"]},{"label":"Content summary","value":"Letter from Simon McGillivray to Henry McKenzie."},{"label":"Provenance","value":"These records were accumulated by Roderick Mackenzie and eventually inherited by the husband of Mackenzie's granddaughter, Louis-Rodrigue Masson.
