In 1806 he had printed a circular letter that he sent out requesting information for his survey. He was interested in geography, longitude and latitude, mountains, rivers, the weather, the soil; flora and fauna and methods of hunting; the First Nations and their history, culture, morals and government; and the history of the fur trade. And his letter included a long list of vocabulary as well. All these were to serve as hints to his informants. Mackenzie had as his model The Statistical Account of Scotland published in the 1790s in twenty-one volumes by Sir John Sinclair. One example of the responses to Mackenzie's circular letter is the series of letters George Keith in the Mackenzie River Department sent him from 1807-1817 in which he described the country, the climate and the inhabitants. He also included a vocabulary list and First Nation stories including a creation myth.|François-Xavier Vassal de Monviel (Monteil, Montviel) was born on November 4, 1759, in Boucherville, Quebec.\n\nHe was a militia and army officer, Justice of the Peace, and landowner. In 1776, he joined the army and took part in the campaigns against the Americans. In 1787, he was granted 500 arpents of land near the seigneury of Beauharnois for his services. He was commissioned a captain in the Royal Canadian Volunteer Regiment in 1797 and served in it until it was disbanded in 1802. In 1807, he was appointed deputy adjutant general of the Lower Canadian militia. After the War of 1812, he retained his office and held it until 1841. For his services during the conflict, he also received 1,200 acres in Frampton Township, and in 1828 he obtained a further 1,200 acres. He received commissions as Justice of the Peace from 1813 to 1828. From 1816 to 1830 he served as a Commissioner for building churches and presbyteries.\n\nDesignated in 1950 by the Geographical Survey, Canton of Montviel, located about 70 km east of Matagami, Quebec is named in his honour.\n\nAbout 1800, he married Marie Marguerite Annance.
