Montreal-based merchant and fur trade, John Gregory was born in England in 1751 and came to North America in 1773. He married Isabella Ferguson of Montreal in 1778. Shortly upon arrival he partnered with fur trade James Finlay. After Finlay's retirement around 1783 or 1784, Gregory was associated with Normand MacLeod, who trade principally to Michilimackinac. In 1785, Gregory and MacLeod sent eight canoes to the post at Grand Portage (near Grand Portage, Minnesota). Later in the 1780s, Gregory was offered partnership with a staunch competitor, the North West Company, which he accepted and subsequently rose to some prominence in the company. He was elected to the Beaver Club in 1791. In 1795, Gregory was made a partner in McTavish, Frobisher and Company.
