Mary Holdich had just promised to be his wife.  Written from York to 'My dear friend'.   The letter is addressed to her at Thorney, Cambridgeshire.   In her letter pressed upon him at parting she dwells upon the difficulty if being 'continuously in the company of worldly people without partaking of their spirit' He warns her of ' the card table, the ball room or the theatre'. He had had bad news; the Lewes School where he was employed as writing master had failed and its 'conductress' had fled overseas leaving her debts, which included his salary, unpaid.
