The Memorial of the undersigned Members of a Committee, formed in London for the purpose of exposing and suppressing the existing traffic in English, Scotch and Irish Girls, for the Purpose of Foreign Prostitution.\nA petition detailing systematic abduction to continent of British subjects, sold to brothel keepers against their will.  Often induced by men of respectable appearance on pretext of marriage or employment, but on arrival sold as prostitutes under false names.  Girls ignorant of language and customs, and continental system of registering prostitutes, are easily duped into believing they are going to Customs House for immigration formalities. Belgian law preventing registration of girls under the age of 21 easily evaded because false birth certificates easily procured in England.   Once immured in licensed house of prostitution, impossible for her to regain freedom.  She becomes a British subject sold into slavery under regulations of a foreign state.  Girls are terrorised, bullied and kept in debt to brothel keepers.  Often sold on, so untraceable.  Seldom allowed out.  Almost impossible for friends to get help from Belgian police or English Consul.  Enslaved until disease makes her unprofitable or death affords release.  Some of the petitioners had visited such girls and helped some escape.  Petitioners unable to find an English party against whom criminal proceedings could be taken and have encountered other legal obstacles to action, so appeal to his Lordship to make changes to Law.  England the proud protector of the enslaved, should make representations to the Government of a friendly ally to render it impossible for British subjects to be deprived of liberty.  Ask him to use his influence to effect the prompt release of subjects decoyed into slavery abroad, whose sorry condition it is hoped will elicit his sympathy. Signed by 10 named petitioners."},{"label":"Resource type general","value":["Physical Object"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Posters"]}],"description":"To the Right Honorable the Earl Granville, KG, Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/c3bdd284-0038-4318-aa25-fd3d127868a3/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"3AMS_O_112_0001","height":5297,"width":3385,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/cd85f83f-fd17-40cb-b9c8-fe166386e7e0/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/cd85f83f-fd17-40cb-b9c8-fe166386e7e0","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":5297,"width":3385},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/c3bdd284-0038-4318-aa25-fd3d127868a3/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/cd85f83f-fd17-40cb-b9c8-fe166386e7e0/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/c3bdd284-0038-4318-aa25-fd3d127868a3/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"3AMS_O_112_0002","height":5305,"width":3370,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/7138f6ae-83f5-4811-9a15-e5b44c26da19/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/7138f6ae-83f5-4811-9a15-e5b44c26da19","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":5305,"width":3370},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/c3bdd284-0038-4318-aa25-fd3d127868a3/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/7138f6ae-83f5-4811-9a15-e5b44c26da19/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/cd85f83f-fd17-40cb-b9c8-fe166386e7e0/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/logo"}
