When first invited to be World's Superintendent of this branch by President Miss Willard some years ago she had hesitated on grounds of advancing years and preferring to avoid high titles and offices, but eventually accepted. Now requests further information to help her decide whether to resign. For 30 years she has laboured for the abolition of the state regulation of vice, but now her life's work is being discredited. Lady Henry Somerset has proposed a scheme to regulate prostitution that 'goes beyond the Contagious Diseases Acts in immorality and indelicacy'.  Women are being led astray by the idea that a compromise may be possible.  Wants to clear the air and requests an indication of the position of the rank and file of the WWTCU before she can consent to remain in office of Superintendent of the Purity Department.  Doesn't know position of revered leader Miss Willard but it would be a terrible blow to know she does not oppose Lady Somerset.  Not sure if members or leaders elect Superintendent - should be sorry to sever connection with members on side of truth, but if election in hands of perverted leaders must do so.  War now between women, 'we are coming into searching and sifting times' in which friendships may have to give way before the 'winnowing blast which shall separate the wavering from the steadfast in their righteous work'.  If Lady Somerset's views hold with Miss Willard or majority of members it would not be agreeable to them that she should continue to wear the title of World's Superintendent of Purity Department.  'What purity can be maintained in private, domestic, social or national life if that great Teacher the State and the Law enthrones itself in the position, before the eyes of all, of the regulator, down to the smallest details, of a disgusting and deadly vice, a vice which is the scourge of the world, the curse of the nations?
