Issued by the Associations for the Repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts.  Urges readers to read, in contrast with the above, Mr Lewis' statement made in the Commons on 21 May 1873 opposing the Bill for the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts, in which he states it would be a smaller calamity for the borough he represents to be 'disfranchised' than be deprived of advantages conferred upon it by the 'misunderstood and maligned' Contagious Diseases Acts. The poster tells the Electors of Oxford that the rejection of Mr Lewis by the Electors of Devonport was a protest against the continuance of 'these vile statutes', Devonport being one of the 18 districts subjected to these laws, and that the Electors returned Messrs Pulleston and Price, pledged to their repeal. Poster calls to 'Men of Oxford' to endorse the actions of Devonport voters and refuse to support the man who is not ashamed to champion the Contagious Diseases Acts, an 'unconstitutional invasion of the rights and liberties of the people, and who seeks, at a cost of £50,000 annually, to render the practice of vice safe'."},{"label":"Resource type general","value":["Physical Object"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Posters"]}],"description":"Poster to Electors of Oxford regarding a statement made by Mr J D Lewis in House of Commons, 21 May 1873","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b954f813-554b-417c-af60-a00e1ef14189/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Poster to Electors of Oxford regarding a statement made by Mr J D Lewis in House of Commons, 21 May 1873","height":2267,"width":5304,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b954f813-554b-417c-af60-a00e1ef14189/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b954f813-554b-417c-af60-a00e1ef14189","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4,8]}]},"height":2267,"width":5304},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b954f813-554b-417c-af60-a00e1ef14189/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b954f813-554b-417c-af60-a00e1ef14189/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b954f813-554b-417c-af60-a00e1ef14189/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/logo"}
