Reproduction of a letter to the Chatham Chronicle from Josephine Butler, written 4 Aug 1871.  Tells Mr Wheeler she would have been glad to address his meeting but had been urged to take a few weeks rest.  Glad to hear of meetings taking place in districts subjected to the Acts.  Shocked to learn of insinuations that objections are strongest in areas unaffected by Acts - this flawed reasoning casts doubt on the English anti-slavery and anti-polygamy movements.  Arguments that slaves were contented did not induce opponents of slavery to overcome their objections to the principle. Similarly no argument in favour of the Contagious Diseases Acts can shake us from the principle that it is a crime for one part of society to reap an advantage at the expense of others.  Protecting men practicing vice opposes moral law.  Government says there is no time for further legislation to replace the Acts, but the first step to any acceptable new legislation would be to repeal the existing Acts.  Instead it seems any future legislation would be based on the same objectionable underlying principle. 'A Government which thus publicly declares itself on the side of immorality is one to be resisted and, if it continues obstinate, to be overthrown.'  The harder the struggle, the more profound the victory will be and a moral lesson to the world - the eyes of Europe and America are upon us.  The extinction of wickedness in other parts of the world depends on the success of this cause.  At the start of the struggle she viewed the Acts as a mere legislative error of judgement, but has since learned that many men actually prefer darkness to light.  It would be good if the campaign resulted in removing the Acts, but she believes it is designed to go further and attack vice fundamentally.  Hopes working men will join the churches against the corrupt morality of our upper and governing classes."},{"label":"Resource type general","value":["Physical Object"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Posters"]}],"description":"Letter from the Secretary of the Ladies' National Association to the Meeting held at Chatham, Aug 8","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b3862e53-a07d-462d-b852-68702e8e716b/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"3AMS_O_094a_0001","height":3717,"width":3177,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/3855f771-779e-44c5-86f4-cd9f543ed7c8/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/3855f771-779e-44c5-86f4-cd9f543ed7c8","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":3717,"width":3177},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b3862e53-a07d-462d-b852-68702e8e716b/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/3855f771-779e-44c5-86f4-cd9f543ed7c8/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b3862e53-a07d-462d-b852-68702e8e716b/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"3AMS_O_094a_0002","height":3771,"width":2907,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/20af0e64-7d07-41ce-9480-6d05eb5e3c2c/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/20af0e64-7d07-41ce-9480-6d05eb5e3c2c","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":3771,"width":2907},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/b3862e53-a07d-462d-b852-68702e8e716b/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/20af0e64-7d07-41ce-9480-6d05eb5e3c2c/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/3855f771-779e-44c5-86f4-cd9f543ed7c8/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/lse/iiif/logo"}
