Letter to Mr Childers from Mr Samuel Fothergill, Parliamentary Agent of the Ladies' National Association for the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts. Letter dated 12 Aug 1872 from Red Lion Hotel, Pontefract, inviting Mr Childers to a meeting in the Town Hall Knottingley the next day to 'address the meeting in explanation and defence of the action of yourself and Mr Gladstone's government on the subject'. Reproduced below is the reply from Mr Hugh E Childers, dated '13 Aug, Pontefract' in which he accuses Mr Fothergill of having disseminated printed papers and making speeches calling on Electors to reject him at the approaching election without having asked his opinion, which is 'not the practice of Englishmen who love justice'.
