In Aug 1888 the Executive Committee of the Friends Association for Abolishing the State Regulation of Vice authorized an appeal for £3,000 to purchase the Bombay Guardian, new machinery and printing plant, and capital to make the paper self-supporting in 3 years. £2,824.14.0 was raised and a trust constituted for its disposal.  A board was constituted with sections in India and England - officers named.  The paper, machinery and plant held in trust for 4 objects:\nthe spread of the gospel in the Eastern hemisphere (Asia)\nextinguishing traffic in vice in Asia\nextinguishing traffic in opium in Asia\nextinguishing traffic in liquor in Asia\n\nThe whole fund was expended and a statement of assets (£500 plant) and liabilities (including return passages of F, P and A D Horne Oct 1898) follows. \n\nIn Oct 1890 the Friends authorized a second appeal for £4,000 to purchase premises. £31,00 was raised and freehold premises bought on Khetwadi Main Road. Committee of Friends are legal Trustees. A financial table details the audited reports of the Friends Association between 1889 and 1899.\n\nA monthly periodical The Banner of Asia was produced in addition to the Bombay Guardian until 1895, devoted to the last 3 objectives.  The Trustees had also rented a mission room and employed a native preacher.  Report details efforts to dispose of the Bombay Guardian (circulation under 1,000 subscribers, priced at one penny) to various missionary organisations.  An offer in progress with Bishop Thoburn, a member of the International Federation for the Abolition of the State Regulation of Vice, of the American Methodist Episcopal Church, a mission in sympathy with the Trust's objectives and with a large Indian constituency.  One subscriber has suggested the leaders of the Students Volunteer Movement be approached to take over the paper and plant - they had already raised considerable funds for land and buildings for their work.
