An account of a deputation made by several gentlemen representing associations promoting the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts to Mr Lewis in his Oxford hotel. Originally intending to oppose him, but since having found that he had changed his mind on some matters, they instead submitted their views to him in private in the hope they could lead him to hesitate before continuing to advocate the Acts. Their opposition centred on the 'evil principles' underlying the legislation and the demoralising effect on the communities affected. Stressed their intention to continue until they had achieved their objective of having the Acts repealed.  Their quarrel with Mr Lewis not personal, however political considerations were secondary to this important issue. Mr Lewis appreciated their motives and was convinced of their sincerity but remained in favour of the Acts because of their beneficial results, and the opinions of medical men and clergymen.  The deputation made Mr Lewis aware of some specific problems, exacerbated by the way the Acts had been passed with insufficient debate.  Mr Lewis countered they had been fully discussed in parliament upon Mr Fowler's proposal for repeal and Members had voted two to one in favour of the Acts, and against repeal.
