Poster asks questions about the Contagious Diseases Acts and supplies answers, explaining what they are, where in operation, prospect of their extension, quotes a Dr Barr saying that police spies had been searching many different kinds of women engaged in various occupations, especially the poor. States the Champion of this legislation is JD Lewis, late MP for Devonport (and presumably prospective parliamentary candidate for Oxford). Offers evidence that innocent women have been injured and outraged under these Acts, including the respectably married, who would rather submit to inspection that appear in the Magistrates court and risk shameful publicity.  The Acts cost 50,000 pounds per year and in 1872 '37,989 'outrages were perpetrated on women free of disease, merely to ascertain if the government doctor cold certify them as fit for the use of profligate men. Is this not ignoble work for a Christian government?'  Reminds electors that the voters of Devonport returned Messrs Pulleston and Price to Parliament instead of John Delaware Lewis and urges the 'Men of Oxford' to 'do their duty' and furnish the 'Champion of the Contagious Diseases Acts' with a return ticket to Devonport"},{"label":"Resource type general","value":["Physical Object"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Posters"]}],"description":"City of Oxford Election.
