September 7, 1928 Mr. Francisco Venegas Fermin G. Riestra no. 451 Guadalajara, Jal. Mexico My very dear brother: I received your letter dated the 15th of September which I now have the pleasure of answering. I see that both you and Agustin are still employed and that everyone is well thanks be to God. I am very much in agreement that you should consider coming over here if at any time the situation there becomes too difficult. And it would be helpful to you because as the saying goes, that of not being a rat in a hole and that much can be learned from traveling. Besides we would welcome you with great joy, and who knows, perhaps it would be a good move for all of you. But as the saying goes: better the bad that is known than the good yet unknown, notwithstanding that here any kind of work would pay not less than six or seven dollars for both of you. Or better yet, you could run a business like mine. As you can see, God has helped me and I have finished paying for it, having owed half of it [$500], even though now I am low on funds for supplies. However here there are facilities available to buy what is needed every day, and now I have bought a used car to bring what is necessary as well as for going out to settle any kind of business. Here the automobile is as indispensable as a horse is to a rancher and even the lowest worker here is owner of said vehicle for they can be found at all prices; even a one-eyed horse or a decrepit donkey costs more over there than does a \"machine\" as they prefer to call it here. It cost me $35 dollars and it is in very good condition, naturally it's a Ford but it is very useful. I have been able to take Lola out almost every day after eight, when I close the \"Grocery Store.\" We all go out for a ride very comfortably for it is not possible by streetcar having so many children, and on foot much less because of so much traffic. It has been calculated that there is one car per inhabitant and so you can have an idea of the number of cars that travel around the streets. Of course, as you can imagine, the expenses of a car are much less than over there, for example gasoline costs about five cents to six cents the liter, so that with a dollar one has enough for a week. I am learning how to drive by going around the block and soon hope to lose my fear of traffic. Today, Sunday the 7th I closed the store as customary at twelve so we could go to Mass at one o'clock and after lunch we went to \"Belvedere\" a colony of compatriots to visit Our Lady of Soledad church. Last month we went swimming in the ocean, it takes 45 minutes and that city is more or less the size of Guadalajara and is called \"Long Beech\" [sic.]. I just answered Sor Gabriela's letter [Soledad's religious name], which she wrote to me from San Francisco, letting me know that they arrived safely and that they are comfortable in that city. I hope God will grant us the opportunity to visit her. I suppose she has also written to you and given you her address which is 771 Ashbury St. I beg you to tell me if you know anything about Al. [He refers to his brother Alfonso who has not been heard from lately]."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A.
