The line was fully functioning in 1870 and served the great silver mines of the Sierra Nevada, such as the Comstock, near Virginia City. In the early 1870s some 80 to 100 carloads of ore from mines in the areas of Virginia City; Minden, Nevada; and Washoe Lake were being sent daily to Carson City for smelting. The line was eventually expanded to Reno, Nevada, in 1872. The station here at Carson City served as the main offices of the railroad company. The Owens Valley was closely related culturally and even economically to the mining towns of western Nevada that the railroad serviced."},{"label":"Source","value":"Center for the Study of Los Angeles Research Collection, Loyola Marymount University"},{"label":"Digital Identifier","value":"LML_CSLA-15-000250001"},{"label":"Date Range","value":"circa 1880"},{"label":"Type","value":["Photographs","Postcards"]},{"label":"Rights","value":"https://library.lmu.edu/archivesandspecialcollections/copyrightandreproductionpolicy/"},{"label":"Location","value":["Carson City (Nev.)","Viriginia City (Nev.)","Comstock Lode (Nev.)","Reno (Nev.)"]}],"description":"Carson City, Nevada.
