My dear little sister:  I am embarrassed because I have not answered your little letter that I received with great joy;  coming from a person so dear to me.  I am very happy to hear that your life is now again peaceful and more or less comfortable.  You should pray to God to free us of so many calamities which grieve us so much in general as  well as in particular.  You know how much we have suffered; nevertheless there are others even more unfortunate in  that they find themselves exiled in this city because they were driven out of their ranchos when  that wave of death and a pack of ferocious wolves invaded [Miguel refers to the fi  reconcentracion, 29 an evacuation of the whole Los Altos region]. And they are here, as I say  without money, without work, and in a strange land far from their people; all this after having  lost in one day all that they had accumulated over many years of work and sacrifice.  Our Lord does with his chosen children what man does with metals: he throws them in the fire to  be purified and this without regret. But then afterwards they take on such brilliance and beauty,  thus producing a very admirable work.  Regards to my parents, Pancho, Agustin and other persons that you know.
