There are several small shops and a hotel along the street, and at the end of the block is the entrance to a pier. A flagpole stands in the middle of the street."},{"label":"Note","value":"In 1900, a group of real estate developers purchased 1,500 acres of land and established the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Company. The investors were anticipating the continued growth of Los Angeles to the east, and the continued success of coastal resorts. The area's first official survey was completed in 1901, for the purpose of laying out a boardwalk along the beach. The Hermosa Beach pier, which was made entirely of wood and extended 500 feet out over the ocean, was built in 1904. In 1913, however, much of it was washed away by high tides, and in 1914 the city built a new concrete structure to replace it. The boardwalk suffered from similar problems, and was replaced by a new concrete walkway that same year. The new pier extended 1,000 feet over the water, and included small pavilions along the sides to provide shade for visitors. On the land end, an auditorium was built, which would later house the county library, Chamber of Commerce, and county lifeguard."},{"label":"Language","value":"eng"},{"label":"Publisher","value":"San Pedro, Calif.; Milwaukee, Wis.: Independent Magazine Co.; E.
