Saint Anthony is pictured in a grey cassock with an elaborately decorated brick-red Huron shawl resembling a priest’s stole, and also wearing a rosary of brown beads. He is reading a green-bound catechism. Beneath him are symbols of the attack on the Native American village where he died: a fire and three-fold leather lash. The shield of Gonzaga University contains a gold eagle facing right with AM on one side, DG on the other; the letters standing for “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,” the Jesuit motto. Above the eagle is the Jesuit seal: the IHS, cross and nails. The Latin scroll at the top reads: “Deo, Patria, Scientia, Artibus” (“God, Country, Science, Arts”). The right claw of the eagle rests on an open book, the left on a shield of stars and stripes over a spray of laurel. The inscription reads: Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington; the date of foundation is 1887.
