A. March 6, 1930 Mr. Juan Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. Mex. Dear Dad, I received your letter dated the 9th of February which I answer with this one. I think that the crisis that exists over there is wide spread because it is also the same here; there is little work and an excess of people. Although President Hoover says that soon up to $500 million dollars will be invested in several works, but in the meantime one is left with nothing to do. And since here it is customary to buy on credit, and when the workers cannot pay what they owe, one is left carrying the burden. Precisely because of the scarcity of jobs, the communists have been putting on demonstrations in this city and even right now there is one that has been causing a great deal of work for the police who are trying to avoid disturbances. One thing is really evident here: liberty. Here everyone is equal before the Law, here no humiliations from above are suffered and one only has to behave well because it doesn't matter if one be black, white, yellow, or green. I certainly would not be here by choice as a salaried worker, but I know also that with the help of God and with nothing more than a thousand of these [dollars], one can live on one's own terms and amongst our own Mexican people. If one knew the English language upon arriving here, one would be able to find less demanding work that isn't as heavy, instead what happens is that those of us who do not speak the language have to accept whatever work is available. As of now the unemployment problem, if not resolved, can seriously affect the rest of us; and it is precisely this that a much debated proposal addresses, which is to deny free entrance to braceros, not only Mexicans but of all nationalities. I’m not sure if this is the remedy or if it will actually be carried out. I will tell you what I think about Mexico and the possibility of you coming to the U.S. Mexico will heal itself if the government remedies its present defects, and doing so without any disturbances. Mexico has many faults, such as caciquismo [political bosses] in towns and petty politics everywhere. As long as there are no safeguards over there for capital investment and the honest worker, there can't be any progress. Our land has all the natural wealth to bring about the happiness of all its inhabitants, but it seems that it is precisely its rich resources that leads to our misfortunes. From my point of view I say that no matter how patriotic one may be, and no matter how much one may love the motherland where one was born, all of that is nevertheless of little importance when one is treated like a slave and needs to sell his conscience in order to enjoy the rights of citizens that simply belong to him by natural law. Thus, no one can blame one's desire to live in a"},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1. Subseries A. Naturally our responsibility ought to be to make Mexico a place where it would proceed in this way, but it is not in our hands to do so for reasons that only God reserves for Himself, surely for our own good, we have no other recourse but to accept things as they come, but I don't think we are acting in bad faith if we look for a corner in this world where we can have tranquility of spirit and a tranquil conscience. They say that the bread of exile is bitter, and I say, and you all know it very well that over there when one is given crumbs, it sticks to one's throat because it tastes like a piece of dry wood. And what hurts the most is the ingratitude and bad treatment coming from one's own than when caused by strangers. Your idea is a good one: if things change in two more years, there is no need to move, our country is the ideal place for us. Well, then we will also be over there if God allows us to live until then, and if not, there is no other recourse than for you to come over here, we have everything here necessary for the final journey. It is my intention to pay all I owe when I can do so, but I expect it will take a long time for it to happen unless God gives me the necessary means before then. If I could at least restart my business activities on my own property, I could very quickly recover, but it is precisely this which at all cost and by all means is being denied, what hope is left? As of now we are grateful for not having to beg for the sustenance of my children that are now many, and who are at least ten years away from helping in the store, because here no one is allowed to work before their eighteenth birthday. This situation doesn't bother me very much, because, hasn't everyone lost something? Some have lost their own lives, others their parents, brothers and husbands. What will it take so that the rest of us will not suffer the same consequences? Can one blame their prosecution of the ruined associate of a bankrupt business, who if left alone, would have prospered, thus benefiting everyone? God well knows who has taken what is not his, they take it, and don’t even hide it. When there is justice we will all recuperate what is ours. I received a letter from Soledad and she asks me to send her regards to you. I hope you have received a photo we sent you so that you can see your grandchildren and get to know Juanito. I believe my mom must have recovered, for you say nothing about her, give her a hug from me and ask that she remember me in her prayers. Agustin hasn't communicated and neither has Nacho. Have Chayo and Lupita died? Regards from all of us to all of you. Your son who awaits your blessing,"},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1.
