July 17, 1929 Mr. Juan Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. Dearest Dad: I received your letter dated the 30th of June which I answer with the present one. We have all been very happy ever since it became apparent that the situation was changing; all of us here [in exile] haven't forgotten our country. We have been following the events [an end to the Cristero Rebellion] step by step through the newspaper and I hope that this, which for now doesn’t appear to be enough, will eventually become a reality. [An agreement to lay down arms was reached between the Catholic Church and the government on June 21, 1929].35 I would like that those of you, who are over there, to keep us fully informed about everything that is going on. I think everything will get better, even businesses will improve. I am very glad to know our parish priest will once again be in charge of his destiny in Zapotlanejo, and in the end I imagine that everything will again return to a normal life, and how we would like to see it come true, but I still have my doubts; there may be an agreement, but it is lacking our trust for now. As for Alfonso, have you heard any news? If he is around there tell us, or if you know anything at all, because it is about time that something be known. If the contrary is true, then I strongly believe that he was the lawyer's companion when he made his [final] journey [Miguel fears Alfonso was among the companions of Miguel Gomez Loza, one of the leaders who was captured and executed on March 21, 1928].36 Chole [Sor Gabriela] wrote to me a few days ago and I answered her. She is sad because perhaps they will not be able to repatriate [return to Mexico] for now. Hoping to write again, I finish this one with our affectionate regards for everyone in that house Your son who awaits your blessing. M.
