Originated in a private garden near Jiang Wan Road, the Japanese shrine was named \"Lu Shang Shen She\" in 1912. In 1932, the shrine was burned down in the January 28 Incident, a six-week battle in Shanghai between China and Japan. In 1933, the shrine was rebuilt in a new location on Jiang Wan Road.
