Bishop was named for Samuel Bishop, a Kern County rancher who came to the valley in 1861. Bishop built two small cabins along the creek. He started the St. Francis Ranch three miles west of the present town. Bishop left the valley after one year as he had trouble with the Paiutes and other newly arrived cattlemen. Sam returned to Kern County where he was elected one of the first supervisors in 1866. The first building in Bishop was a blacksmith shop moved from Owensville in 1864. The first church east of the Sierras was built in 1869 by the Rev. Andrew Clark, where Brockman Lane is at present, and was nicknamed Gospel Swamp.
