In 1862, President Lincoln's Homestead Bill opened the canyon up to further settlement. During the 1920s, it was a popular weekend destination for Hollywood stars, providing both privacy and a beautiful natural setting. During the 1950s, blacklisted actor Will Geer moved to the area, and, along with his friend Woody Guthrie, created the beginnings of an artists' colony that grew and flourished during the 1960s. Originally built as lodgings for workers on the Roosevelt Highway project, many of these bungalows by the shore of Topanga Lagoon later became part of the Topanga Ranch Motel."},{"label":"Language","value":"eng"},{"label":"Publisher","value":"Los Angeles, Cal.: M.
