January 29, 1931 Mr. Francisco Venegas Guadalajara, Jal. Méx. Dear brother; I refer to your letter of the 15th of January of this year. We are aware of mom's health and we hope for her complete recovery and we wish that once the warm weather returns she will feel better. Do not be surprised if any day now we give you the news that we leave here. I include an article from La Opinión that is published here so that you know how things are here not only for us foreigners but even for the sons of this country that don't know what to do because jobs are extremely scarce; this is due to an excess of production. Also they say this crisis is worldwide. I think that your idea of starting your own business is your best option given the lack of jobs and our custom of being free to use our own initiative. For a long time I have resisted suggesting to you to come over here and to run a business in this country. I would have done so if México had continued getting worse and here things were more or less the same as when I started, but each day it has become worse; I barely finished paying last August for the car that I bought with the intention of taking it, if things got settled, to go and work over there or maybe even sell it at a good price, for here it cost close to one thousand dollars with interest, insurance and all, and I was paying $43.16 each month and my business did not feel it. Afterwards I also bought a washing machine on credit for $190 dollars and I just finished paying for it and now we have started making monthly payments on an ironing machine that costs $94.50, but the business lately has been quite slow due to so many fellow countrymen having left and those who remain hardly work at all. On the other hand my expenses have increased considerably, even though we don’t have employees. We have been able to do it all by ourselves, because here a maid earns at least a $1.00 per day and furthermore Lola has the help of the machines for washing and ironing and in two to three hours she does it all. You will see it all when we go, why we can even establish a Laundry service over there, and it doesn't need much electricity for which I believe it will not turn out costly. We pay $8.00 a month for electricity, power and gas for cooking and a hot water tank. So in case this doesn't get any better I will sell the store before we end up with nothing and we will go in the car to arrive with funds to do something there. I am aware that you spoke with the Martinez' gentlemen concerning the document. I would like them to know that I had news that the house attached to the store is falling, that the kitchen and the dining room are already without a roof and surely with many leaks as well. I believe that those gentlemen will not be indifferent to such a thing because for now the houses represent the only guarantee of the amount that I owe them."},{"label":"Is Part Of","value":"Venegas Family Papers, Collection Number 99, Series 1.
