The oldest park in Los Angeles, it was originally known as La Plaza Abaja, the lower plaza, and was renamed Central Park in the early 1890s. In 1900, the 7th Regiment Monument was erected at the corner of 6th and Hill as a memorial to soldiers of the Spanish-American War. The park was redesigned by John Parkinson in 1911 in a classical style with paved paths, palm-shaded walks and a central fountain. It was the site of bond rallies during WWI. In 1918, at the end of WWI, it was renamed Pershing Square in honor of General John J. Pershing. A statue of a WWI Doughboy was erected in 1924. The park became a popular site for orators and rallies. The park was redesigned when a parking garage was installed beneath it in 1954."},{"label":"Transcription","value":"On back:\"On the Road of a thousand wonders\""},{"label":"Language","value":"eng"},{"label":"Publisher","value":"San Francisco: California Sales Co."},{"label":"Type","value":["Postcards"]},{"label":"Digital Identifier","value":"LML_MS-042-003110001"},{"label":"Object Identifier","value":"LML_MS-042-00311"},{"label":"Geographic Location","value":"Pershing Square (Los Angeles, Calif.)"},{"label":"Subject","value":"Parks--California--Los Angeles; Ornamental horticulture--California--Los Angeles; Gazebos--California--Los Angeles;"},{"label":"Title","value":"Central Park, Los Angeles, Cal."},{"label":"Date Range","value":"circa 1911"},{"label":"Source","value":"Department of Archives and Special Collections, William H.
