In 1902 he opened a saloon in Big Pine and later moved his family there. He also developed mining interests in the Chrysopolis, California area, beginning in the latter part of the 1890s. Voter registration lists from Big Pine in 1922 record his occupation as miner. John Black's wife was Rose, and the two were the parents of Rosalind and J. D. Black.
